SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what businesses should know
Search, answer engines and AI assistants read your content differently. Here is how to serve all three without chasing three separate strategies.

People now find businesses in three ways: classic search results, answer engines that extract a direct response, and AI assistants that summarise and recommend. Each has an acronym — SEO, AEO, GEO — and each has vendors promising to sell you the edge. In practice they share one foundation, and the differences are smaller than the noise suggests.
The three, briefly
- SEO: ranking pages in classic search results. Driven by relevance, content quality, site health and links.
- AEO: structuring content so answer engines can extract it directly — clear definitions, direct answers, well-marked questions and answers.
- GEO: being understood, attributed and cited by generative AI systems — consistent facts about who you are, substantive content, and crawlable HTML rather than text locked inside images.
The shared foundation
All three reward the same underlying qualities: content that answers real questions clearly, facts that are consistent everywhere they appear, pages that load and render for crawlers, and structured data that agrees with what the page visibly says. A business with thin, derivative pages cannot optimise its way into any of the three channels.
What genuinely differs
SEO cares about pages and rankings per query. AEO cares about extractable answers: a page that opens each section with a direct, self-contained answer serves it. GEO cares about the entity: who you are, what you do, what you have published — because AI systems synthesise across sources and attribute recommendations to businesses whose facts are stable and verifiable across the site and structured data.
A practical approach
- Write content around the questions your buyers actually ask — one useful page per real question, not near-duplicate pages per keyword variation.
- Open each section with a direct answer, then deepen it. This serves AEO and readers equally.
- Keep your company description, services and facts identical across every page and in your structured data.
- Publish a smaller number of genuinely useful articles rather than a large number of thin ones.
- Measure what you can honestly attribute — enquiries, not citations you cannot control.
What not to do
Do not chase acronyms with separate near-identical page sets, do not stuff FAQs to target snippets, and do not believe anyone who guarantees AI citations. The mechanics of generative engines keep changing; the qualities they reward — clarity, substance, consistency — do not.
The businesses that win in all three channels are the ones that simply know their subject and explain it well. That is not an optimisation trick — it is the strategy.
